Covid-19 – Important Customer Update

The challenges businesses have faced over the last few months have been unprecedented. Now as we begin to ease out of lockdown, we are presented with a new set of challenges as buildings and offices prepare to re-open. By communicating our approach clearly, we hope we can help you and your clients understand how we can help.

First and foremost, Metro is a life safety business and the threat of Covid-19 means that we have had to adapt our approach significantly - but in a considered manner. We have and will continue to provide the services which are required to keep your buildings safe by adapting our scope to meet all NHS and government guidance. In line with this guidance we have stood down those staff that are in the field and in the 'at risk' categories. We look forward to them re-joining as soon as it is safe to do so.

Operational management

Our office has now reopened and we are making a phased return for some of our staff on a strict rota basis. However we are running on a cloud-based helpdesk with most of our service teams still working from the home for the majority of time. Full support and lines of communication remain open, but phone calls in particular can be affected by mobile network instability.  Please email if there is a phone issue.

In the field

Our field capability remains very good, but mobilising new services is challenging, as are some remote sites because of team members that have stood down.  We will communicate issues on your own buildings directly to you.  Please see our Covid-19 specific RAMs for further detail on how we have adapted our scopes.

Weekly visits

We will continue to visit all properties where we are providing weekly services unless have been asked to stand down.  If we cannot gain access, we will take a photo of the front door demonstrating it is secure, and if we can see the panel, check to see if it is displaying any faults.

Fire evacuation drills and training

The LFB have issued some excellent guidance on how best to manage risks and prioritise works on buildings that are re-opening. For more information please see COVID-19 Returning to Work - LFB Guidance.

In response Metro are now beginning to deliver fire evacuation drills and training. We have adapted the scope to incorporate the LFB guidance and also to ensure a socially distanced responsible service. For more information see Fire Evacuation Drills During Covid-19

Details of individual training exercises will be communicated in the normal manner - If you do have any concerns or properties you wish us to prioritise please get in touch.

Water safety services

Our water risk assessment team is now operating. If you need particularly urgent advice (perhaps because you have had a property closed down) please do get in touch to allow us to schedule accordingly.

Many buildings have been closed/partially closed during the Covid-19 lockdown. Reduced water usage within these premises may present increased legionella risk. Information regarding the safe management of water systems during the Covid-19 outbreak can be downloaded here.

Asbestos Services

Our asbestos services are now available however there may be some lead in time constraints.

Assistance with re-opening premises

Our Building Services division has been helping a number of clients with a diverse range of requirements to get their properties safely open for a different scope of occupation. Whilst PPM’s have continued as normal for most sites, many organisations are taking advantage of empty or partially occupied sites to undertake works that are potentially disruptive. For more information please get in touch.

We are also able to offer maintenance services on some properties where our customers may have had an in-house capability, or where they may have a supplier who is not able to continue providing these services.  Please speak to your account manager for more information

Other services

Our other services including; fire risk assessments and emergency callouts have been maintained where feasible and safe to do so. This is judged on a case by case basis and discussed with you if there is a potential issue.

Our Tester SMART system can provide you with a key issues report within 30 mins of the test being completed, so we can let you know immediately if any serious faults have been identified. Photographic evidence of key issues is available where helpful. We can also email your approved contractors so issues are resolved promptly with no delay and no unnecessary paperwork.

Paperless reports are sent out monthly, but if you're in a hurry and can't wait for your report to arrive we can access an up to date status report for you on demand.

The Fire Industry Association is a not-for-profit trade association with the aim of promoting the professional status of the UK fire safety industry. Representing the industry leaders, they work to communicate and promote best practice and ensure standards continue to improve.

Metro SRM are members of the FIA and also sit on the Fire Risk Assessment Council.

UK Fire Association

Members of the UK Fire Association aim to share information and best practice for the fire industry, as well as encouraging the development of expertise and high service levels. Their comprehensive Code of Practice means eligible companies, like Metro Safety, need to show that they hold appropriate levels of insurance and that personnel are competent and trained.

Metro SRM are BAFE certified under scheme SP205 Life Safety Fire Risk Assessment.

BAFE is the independent third party registration body for the fire protection industry. This scheme is designed to give assurance to those commissioning fire risk assessments and give confidence in the quality and relevance of the services being provided. It is essential that the fire risk assessor is a competent person, and the fire risk assessor has a duty of care to the organization on which legislation imposes a requirement for the fire risk assessment.



Metro Safety is BAFE certified under scheme SP203-1 Fire detection and alarm systems, design.

The scheme recognises the importance of providing compliant systems while at the same time minimising false alarms. It aims to give fire protection system users and regulatory authorities confidence that accredited companies providing fire alarm systems, have processes in place to effectively undertake such activities within their defined scope of work.

IFE - Institution of Fire Engineers

The IFE upholds professional standards within public and private fire sectors, offering assessment of knowledge, experience and development and promoting good practice. They also provide professional recognition for members. Metro SRM's fire risk assessors are all currently working towards inclusion on the IFE register of assessors. Many of them already hold Graduate or Member-level membership of the Institution.

IOSH - Institution of Occupational Safety and Health


IOSH is the world's largest chartered body for health and safety professionals. They aim to secure and justify trust and confidence in the work of their members by ensuring high levels of technical competence and professional conduct. Our consultants include both Graduate or Chartered Members of IOSH. Our Chartered Members of IOSH also feature on the new OSH Consultants Register.

Fire Safety Equipment Testing

We also have one of the UK's largest specialist trained and competent tester networks reliably delivering around 150,000 weekly and monthly system tests and fire drills per year. This includes weekly fire alarm and sprinkler tests, monthly emergency lighting tests as well as smoke detector and smoke vent and extraction tests. Most clients’ buildings will contain water systems in the form of basic kitchen and bathroom facilities with many also containing air conditioning systems and other more complex water related plant.

Given the correct conditions even simplistic water systems have the potential to harbour and spread legionella bacteria. They can present a significant risk not only to building occupants but also to visitors and the general public. A water risk assessment is required to help identify any potential hazards and if necessary recommend actions to reduce the risk of legionella outbreaks at your building. A plan will also need to be put in place to monitor and manage any ongoing risks.

All our asbestos services are provided by our subsidiary, Strategic Risk Management (Asbestos) Limited. Our surveyors are able to undertake a variety of asbestos surveys in accordance with the requirements of ISO17020 and HSG 264 to identify and help you manage any asbestos risks within your clients’ buildings and ensure compliance with CAR 2012. 

We are able to undertake the following types of asbestos surveys:

Asbestos Management Survey

Used to locate any asbestos containing materials (ACMs) which could be damaged or disturbed during normal occupancy, including foreseeable maintenance and installation work.

Refurbishment and Demolition Survey

This type of survey is needed prior to carrying out any refurbishment or demolition work. Our clients use this survey to locate ACMs where refurbishment is taking place or in the whole building in the case of demolition.

Asbestos Re-inspections

Following your asbestos survey we can help you manage your on-going asbestos management plan by conducting asbestos re-inspection surveys to monitor and report on the condition of any ACMs previously identified.

Health & Safety

Health & Safety Risk Assessments

Our health & safety risk assessments can help to identify hazards and highlight the actions required to reduce and eliminate potential sources of harm within your clients’ properties. If any remedial actions are required, we would recommend workable, practical solutions that are cost-effective whilst still meeting legislative requirements.

All our risk assessments are conducted by professionally qualified consultants in accordance with best practice guidelines recommended by the HSE. Our consultants' breadth of experience and knowledge means they are able to offer you the site specific advice required to meet the demands of your individual properties.

Monthly Health & Safety Inspections

We are able to carry out regular visual inspections to help identify and record potential hazards within the common areas of your property, such as stairwells, landings, plant rooms and car parks. Generally health & safety inspections would be carried out on a monthly basis, or as recommended by your risk assessment.

The visit would be recorded in the site logbook. Clear site information would be distributed to you through monthly electronic reports with serious faults reported on the day identified. Visit records would be witnessed and also kept off-site so that you can call upon them in the event of a significant incident.

As well as satisfying your insurers, monthly health & safety inspections help you comply with the Health & Safety at Work Act.
